How Can a Latex Mattress Topper Prolong the Life of Your Mattress?

Posted on September 1st, 2010 in Foam Mattress by foammattress  Tagged , ,

A Latex Topper is one of the greatest innovations in technology invented that helps prolong the life of your mattress. This is made of a rubber-based material from the hevea brasiliensis tree in the tropics called a latex compound, in which air is infused to create an open cell structure that promotes durability and strength. It simply lasts longer than fiber or foam because of its resiliency thus prolonging the life of your mattress. Since it is made of the finest natural materials, it is also considered to be maintenance free and is also antimicrobial inhibiting the growth of fungi and bacteria, thus reducing fungal infections that usually are a nuisance.

Aside from all these benefits, you can also be assured of having an improvement in your health, which is by far the best reason why you should be getting a latex topper. When your health is on the line, you don’t even have to ask yourself twice if it’s worth it. As they say, “Health is wealth.” This famous line holds the essence of what life should be. In this fast-paced world, where you hardly get any sleep at all, one should at least take the time to ponder and consider the priorities that would make a difference in your life. If you are not sleeping well, then stop and think of a solution. If you simply choose to ignore such a minor issue, then in the long run it will become a major problem. Sleeping disorders should be taken seriously because it can affect your lifestyle, health and personality.

People with sleeping disorders acquire depression which is a serious, psychological and mental problem. Researchers have found that a sleeping disorder called sleep deprivation causes death in lab animals. In human beings long-term sleep deprivation can cause fatigue, weight loss or weight gain, mental stress, daytime sleepiness and poor muscle reflexes.

So, with all that said, do you want to know how to get a good night sleep? First of all, make sure you are sleeping in a comfortable bed that supports your spinal column and relieves the pressure of your body, especially the tired muscles on your hips and shoulders. A mattress that is uplifting and not sagging, promotes good circulation and increased blood flow, putting you in a relaxing sleep. The next tip should be to choose a mattress that is cool and breathable, so it can help to regulate the temperature of your body naturally.

Experts highly recommend a Pure Latex Bliss mattress that can do all these, plus even more. Since it is made of natural latex that comes from the rubber tree, it is a fast response material that moves as you move so you simply won’t find yourself getting stuck uncomfortably in the middle of the night. This type of mattress also reduces the restless motions of tossing and turning, thus giving you a sound and healthy sleep all throughout the night.

How To Build Your Own Memory Foam Mattress

Posted on August 30th, 2010 in Foam Mattress by foammattress  Tagged ,

You may not afford the luxury of buying a Tempurpedic mattress but you can still benefit from memory foam’s unique temperature-sensitivity, if you really like the feel of it. One option is buying a cheaper mattress.

Most of these Tempur-Pedic Swedish clones, however, are not as comfortable, don’t provide enough back support and break down in 2-3 years. Another option would be making your own viscoelastic foam mattress, a challenge DIY enthusiasts will certainly enjoy. Here’s how to get started.

Your home-made visco foam mattress will essentially be made of:

Memory foam topper
Foam core
Foundation (optional)
Accessories (optional)

Memory Foam Comfort Layer

It’s important to remember that viscoelastic foam is not supportive enough to make a mattress entirely of it which is why you will use a 3-inch thick topper on top of the mattress core. Here’s what to look for in a visco foam topper:

Open-cell structure which eliminates pressure points (air pressure is spread to adjoining cells instead of upwards to constrict blood circulation).

High density of 4lb minimum (5lb is recommended).

Sensitivity to body temperature which makes the foam become softer when warmer and contour your shape with added precision.

Firmness of 13 ILD minimum (14 is ILD recommended). ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection which measures firmness in polyurethane foams.

For a more luxurious feel, use the 4-inch thick Tempur mattress overlay. It’s made of high-quality, temperature-sensitive 5.34lb memory foam of 14 ILD firmness.

Mattress Core

The mattress core is as important as the memory foam layer on top, if not more crucial. Without a firm and supportive foam underneath it, you keep sinking in until you bottom out. Here’s what your foam mattress core should be made of:

Between 1 and 4 layers of good quality, high-resilience foam of 30-36 ILD firmness.
The deeper layers should be thicker, firmer and denser in order to provide better support.
Adding intermediate layers between the bottom one and the Tempurpedic-style mattress topper ensures a more delicate, luxurious feel.

Bed Foundation

The memory foam layer and core are usually enough to make a home-made Tempur-Pedic mattress. Once built, you may wish to place it on a bed foundation in order to raise it from the floor (by 10-inches or more). Alternatively, you can place it directly on the floor.

If you do choose to place the mattress on a foundation make sure it’s the solid type. Memory foam mattresses should not be used on slates and box springs. A perfectly flat, no-spring surface is required for the foam to properly support body weight and relieve pressure points. Tempur-Pedic warranty, for example, is voided if you use their product on anything else than a solid foundation.

Accessories For Added Luxury

Add a terry velour cover to your new, home-made memory bed for that extra bit of luxury but avoid at all costs to add further padding (of any kind) between yourself and the memory foam layer.

Insulation from the body means the viscoelastic foam cannot react the best it possibly can to body temperature. It won’t soften and flow around your body but remain firm, cold and uncomfortable.

Bottom Line

Most people don’t realise that it’s actually easy making a memory foam mattress of your own, even with that bit of Tempurpedic distinction. All you need is to pay lots of attention when buying the foam for the comfort layer and the mattress core.

Memory Foam Mattress Purchasing Tips

Posted on August 22nd, 2010 in Foam Mattress by foammattress  Tagged , ,

Memory foam was developed by NASA in the 1970’s, but it was made famous in the consumer market as topper pads. Later on in the 1990’s, the memory foam mattress was established. From then till today, it has occupied a very prominent space in the mattress industry.

Sleeping on a memory foam mattress is considered good for people with back problems, arthritis, bone and joint problems. Memory foam mattresses are available in a number of sizes such as single, double, queen, king, California queen, California king and super king sizes. Some double memory foam mattresses have both a softer and harder side to meet the requirements of sleeping partners. Mostly, the density of a memory foam mattress is about five inches.

There are certain points that must be kept in mind while purchasing a memory foam mattress, so that you get a suitable mattress of your choice.

Selecting the right type of memory foam mattress is really a very important decision. These following tips may really prove helpful to you when buying one.

Mattress with Temperature Sensitivity

It is not necessary that all the mattresses available in the market are sensitive towards temperature. However, this feature of the mattress must not be underestimated as it is very important. This is the feature that makes a memory foam mattress unique, and absolutely comfortable.

While looking for a mattress, if you come across one that is adjustable to the temperature, do buy it. In a warmer environment this mattress will absorb the body heat. It will also soften up. Similarly, in a cooler environment it will get firmer.

Mattress with the Correct Thickness

The thickness of the mattress is one of the important things to consider. It is the thickness of the memory foam that matters when buying the correct memory foam mattress. The thickness of the memory foam can be defined as the total weight of the mattress, calculated in a cubic foot of memory foam. For instance, if you want to cut a piece of memory foam into a 13×13×13 in a cube shape, and then you weigh it. Thus, the resulting weight will be counted as the thickness of the mattress.

You may come across various theories relating to the correct thickness of a memory foam mattress. But it is always better to select a mattress with the thickness between 5.3 to 5.9 lb. This is because a memory foam mattress with the thickness lower than 5.3 will not be able to provide proper support to your lower back, shoulders and hips.

Likewise, if the thickness of the memory foam mattress is more than 5.9, it will be too thick to provide any proper support.

Mattress with a Sufficient Top Layer

While going to buy a memory foam mattress, it is important that you select one that has sufficient memory foam on the top layer. Generally, it is best to opt for a mattress with 3.5 inches of memory foam as its top layer.

If the layer is too thin, in this case, it will be like sleeping on polyurethane foam. It is quite possible that you will not have comfortable sleep on it.

By keeping these points in mind, you can easily purchase the correct memory foam mattress.
